HEALTH TIP #12:
Get the facts on alcohol

Many of us have heard that alcohol, especially red wine, can be good for your heart. While research has shown this to be true in moderation, there are nonetheless certain recommendations to follow. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, “Drinking too much of any type of alcohol can increase your blood pressure and contribute to the development of heart disease and stroke. However, if you really want to have an impact on your heart health, you're better off eating a healthy diet, being physically active by doing moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for 150 minutes a week, and becoming smoke-free.” Also, drinking alcohol can contribute to adding empty calories, meaning that it does not contain any nutrients that are necessary for good health.
For healthy adults with no medical restrictions, consumption should not exceed 2 drinks a day with a weekly limit of 14 drinks for men and 9 drinks for women. Excessive drinking should be avoided.
One drink equals:
341 mL / 12 oz. (1 bottle) of regular strength beer (5% alcohol)
142 mL / 5 oz. wine (12% alcohol)
43 mL / 1 ½ oz. spirits (40% alcohol)
