HEALTH TIP #14:
Nutrition food label - Serving size

As mentioned in the previous health tip, learning to read food labels is a crucial aspect to healthy eating and ensuring that you are making informed choices when it comes to fuelling your body. The old saying “you are what you eat” is not that far off.
The first step to reading a food label is to look at the serving size. The serving size will tell you exactly how many calories and nutrients you will be consuming by eating or drinking that amount of food. You must always compare the serving size to the amount that you are about to eat or drink. If you have twice the amount stated on the serving size, you have to multiply by two the calories and nutrients listed.
When reading food labels, you must also remember that the portion sizes on the labels don’t always correspond to recommended portion sizes. A Registered Dietitian can help you determine proper portion sizes, as well as how many portions you need from each food group.
When you are comparing products, it is important that you are comparing apples with apples, meaning that you should compare the same serving sizes. This may require that you do a little math.
Take care of your health…you’re worth it!
