HEALTH TIP #19:
Nutrition food label - List of ingredients
When looking at a food label, the first thing you need to read is the nutrition facts table, followed by the list of ingredients. The ingredients lists will tell you exactly what is in the food that you are about to eat.
It is important to remember that the ingredients are listed in descending order of proportion by weight. This means that if the first ingredient is sugar, this is the main ingredient in the product and should only be eaten in moderation. When buying grains products, look to see if the first ingredient has the word “Whole” as in whole grain wheat, whole grain rye, etc.
For people with allergies (nuts, eggs, milk, etc.), it is crucial to always refer to the ingredients in order to make sure that the product does not contain the allergen ingredient.
If you would like to know more about food labeling, you can always contact a Registered Dietitian in your region.
Take care of your health, you’re worth it!
