HEALTH TIP #25:
Fill up on Fibers
Fill up on Fibers
Fiber has many health benefits; it can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce blood cholesterol, regulate blood sugars and also plays a major role in digestion such as intestinal regularity. Also, once in your stomach, fiber expands, so eating enough of it will help keep you feeling full.
Are you getting enough fiber? Women should be consuming 25 grams of fiber every day, and men should consume 38 grams per day. Fiber is found in whole grains foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as well as in legumes (ex: beans, peas and lentils).
A few ways to improve the amount of fiber you consume is to eat more fruits and vegetables, or eat more whole grain foods such as choosing whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, and switching from white to brown rice. While it is quite easy to get a sufficient amount of fiber through a balanced nutrition, if you feel you aren't able to get enough with your diet, you can always consider taking a product like Benefiber or Metamucil.
An important thing to keep in mind while increasing fiber in your diet is to increase it gradually, and make sure you drink plenty of water.
Take care of your health, you're worth it!
