HEALTH TIP #23:
Prostate Cancer Prevention

During his lifetime, 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, there were approximately 25 500 diagnosed cases in 2011.  One of the ways to prevent the disease is by having a screening test done starting at age 40 for early detection of prostate cancer. In the case of any disease prevention, it is also important to lead a healthy lifestyle, such as regular physical activity and healthy eating habits.

The signs and symptoms for prostate cancer are:
  • need to urinate often, especially at night
  • intense need to urinate (urgency)
  • difficulty in starting or stopping the urine flow
  • inability to urinate
  • weak, decreased or interrupted urine stream
  • a sense of incompletely emptying the bladder
  • burning or pain during urination
  • blood in the urine or semen
  • painful ejaculation
If you have any concerns or symptoms, it is important to discuss it with your family doctor.

Take care of your health, you're worth it!
